car breaking down

Summer weather is finally upon us! There’s nothing like rolling down the windows, listening to some tunes and breathing in the fresh air as you drive. As great as the summer weather may be, it also can take quite the toll on your car. Here are some of the most common car parts that are affected by hot temperatures.

Tires

You should be checking your tire pressure year round and putting an even bigger emphasis on them during the summer. Having hot tires on hot pavement can result in a blowout. Having improperly inflated tires can make the matter worse so make sure to check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Battery

Cold weather is usually more harmful on your battery than warm but the hot summer months can also take a toll on your battery. Long summer trips add extra vibration to the battery and can shorten the lifespan of it. Make sure to always have jumper cables or a battery box on hand in case of emergencies.

Oil

Warmer weather results in more travel and more miles on your vehicle. Changing your oil is another year-round maintenance check you should do but it should be elevated during the summer. Since your hot engine needs all the lubrication it can get, replacing your oil in intervals to make sure it always has a sufficient amount is a must. A rule of thumb is to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Coolant

Just like antifreeze keeps your engine from freezing in the winter, coolant keeps your engine from overheating during the summer. The last thing you want is for your engine to overheat and break down during a long road trip, not to mention it can end up with you having to spend thousands of dollars to replace it. Your car has a temperature gauge for a reason, keep a close eye on it!
